Positioning Theory with My lovely classmate Stew

More  peripheral place. It looks peaceful and betiful. It goes well wiht  good landscape.

It is also center of  the main place. It make us feel free and
very peaceful.

Compare to main square, more perioheral place.

Main central place
People can read a book and get some rest in this main place.
People donot fishing here. Do not allow to threw a trash in the pond.
This is central space in front of fall. It has roun shape which is made with wood.
It seem like big square.  We could have a lecture here. We couldnot have a soccer match here.
Because it disturbs the peace and peaceful quality here.
We could take a relax here.

How can we apply this destroy of Korean in Advertisement filed into our English education teaching field?

In my English education teaching filed

Through this activity, I consistently  asked how I could  apply these news clips about the polltion of Korean language and Hallyu (the Korean wave) into my teaching field properly.

It is not easy though. So I used this idea into my class.

Activity One - Find the awkward Korean word that is written in hangul in the news paper.

Through this activity, students notice  how much  Engish is used unconsciously in the world around them.

Activity Two – Be an ad maker or a seller for the company.

Through this activity, students will make an ad using only English  words they already learned in the English classroom. Let them play using English to make the ads.

English goes with just English, Korean goes with Korean.

Student might realize that we cannot say that it looks luxurious or cheesy just by using English or Korean.

That is a bad effect of our mass cultures.

Activity Three – Share our idea through this activity.

How much has their ideas been changed through this activity?

The results are …….

Toward a Playful Pedagogy: Popular Culture and the Pleasures of Transgression

First Article

Olive de Olive

This ad was found in a department store that sell brand-name clothes.
This  ad is called “God of Destruction of Korean”. It shows how much we use  English improperly for ads.

After reading this article, I noticed that so many people mentioned something to the effect of, " Even though I tried to find the meaning of what they want to express, it does not ring a bell any more”.  Lots of people criticize that.

News Clip

The title means that technically, if the ad maker uses Korean in their ad, they are worried that it could be shown as a cheesy and cheap product in public. They  are also afraid of repelling consuming  atmospheres when they use Korean in their product ads.

So these atmospheres reproduce using awkward Korean with English in the Korea industry field.

내츄럴한 터치의 탄 컬러 가죽을 콤비한 유러피안 스타일의 숄더 백
(자연스럽게 손질한 황갈색 가죽을 덧붙인 유럽풍 가방)

In this sentence,  가죽’ is the only word in Korean.

Such as 보디감, 그립감 like unusual compound word, double expression like 아웃솔 (outsole) , 통풍이 잘되는 벤틸레이션 (ventilation).
Those awkward expressions are prevalent within our society.

Ad makers mention that it is not pollution (destructon of  our language) of Korean; it is one tactic for their marketing strategy to target high class individuals.

Second News Articles

Outside of Korea.

As we know Hallyu (the Korean Wave) is boosting around the world.
Korean Pop (K-POP) and Korean drama (e.g. Winter Sonata, Dae Jangkum) are the largest factors in boosting the popularity of Korean culture through mass media like TV, YouTube.

So lots people in the world they are getting interested in learning Korean. It is a good sigh because Hallyu is affecting a wide range of people in the world.

The popularity of the Korean culture has been increasing, so the Korean government needs to pay attention to overseas Korean Language Educations as foreigner’s become interested in Korean pop culture.

It creates demand for language study. Foreigners can learn all about Korean culture while the language just as we, as a second languge learners, also learned the language as well as the culture.

Those two articles have quite opposite sides.

In our country, we don’t think Korean is a worthy  languae for making ads anymore.

Korean words could sometimes be considered cheesy  in ads for marketing  products.

Outside of our country, lots people want to learn the Korean language with Korean pop cultures.

Question

1.     What do you think of this phenomenon?

2.     How can we apply this destruction of  Korean in advertisements into our English education teaching field?

3.     If you adjust this phenomenon into English Class, what would you do ?
